We will explore mapping and build and display maps using Google Maps
and Google Earth (including adding geo-referenced text, pictures and,
if time allows, sound and video). You will explore and critique the efforts of agencies and non-profit
organizations to provide publicly accessible information inside of
Google Earth and on their own websites and servers through web-based
GIS platforms. We will
explore (and you will use and critique) online GIS services from
government agencies inside of the US and a sample of other countries,
and from some international agencies to explore environmental and
demographic data as well policy and planning information. We will
experiment with an online mapping service called IndieMapper and a
powerful map creation service called MapBox. We will, if all goes, well, use hand-held GPS devices and use an
I-Pad based data collection interface.
Finally, you will learn
and use the basic functions of the ARCMAP software in a limited online
environment and then in both online and desktop versions. You will make maps, obtain and display data, and critique each
other’s work. We may
also have one or two guests who are GIS-professionals.
